Shakespeare's Desdemona is a Venetian beauty who infuriates and disappoints her father, a Venetian senator, when she runs off with Otello, a Moorish military prodigy from Venice. When her husband is sent to Cyprus in the service of the Venetian Republic, Desdemona accompanies him.
